An Odyssey by The Yamaha Bros

Words by Russ Daniel

After some months of planing on Saturday 3rd August I set out for the OCR and picked up my co rider at Culcairn, one Freddy Kelsh. We motored off through slightly inclement weather till we got to the other side of Moulamein where we were fortunate to be passing through while they were getting their annual rainfall. Undeterred we wandered on to Mildura where we bludged a bed and food off our old mate Chicky and during the course of the evening we demolished several bottles of fine red wine.

Next morning we headed north west to Broken Hill and then south to Yunta. Freddy and I camped a few Ks west in the bush while unbeknown to us Blunder Bro Blue was living it up in the Yunta Pub.

Freddy and I motored off through the Flinders then north to the ghost town of Farina where we camped in the lovely little campground behind the old town.

Tuesday morning we headed north to Marree where we ran into other motorcyclists headed for the OCR. We arrived at Mungerannie late afternoon and we were joined shortly after by Big Greg, Mac and Johono and enjoyed the hospitality and a counter tea in the bar.

Wednesday we headed north again, we took the outside Track to Birdsville while the others went via the inside Track. Macs rear suspension failed along the way. At Birdsville we heard news that little Emma had come off near Arkaroola and broke her collarbone. Someone else had hit an emu and flipped their sidecar near Tibooburra and also broke their collarbone among other things. We set up camp in the windswept campground along with a dozen or so other rallyists and then went to the pub. Charlie Brown was another casualty there with a broken bike and he and Mac planned a strategic withdrawal to the east. We dined at the new Curry kitchen along with most of the other rallists and had a lovely night around the fire in the open air restaurant.

Russ and the mighty Yamaha Thursday morning we headed north again and made the caravan park at Boulia mid afternoon. By now the troops were really starting to gather with thirty odd people camped at the park or in the pub. PJ and McArdle, RTO and the Swiss set up in the park while Vince and Adrian were ensconced in the pub where later most people washed dust from their dry throats. We also got word that Chick, a western Australian had tossed his bike north of Birdsville and I think another collarbone and a ride in the flying doctor.

Friday Chris volunteered to let team Yamaha go support for him and we set off along the Donohue Highway, read, goat track, with little rocks, big rocks and more bloody rocks. Chrises BMW broke down twice and PJ caught up with us and then had a flat tyre. After a couple of goes we eventually got the bead to pop out on the rim and set off again. When we stopped for lunch Chris also managed a flat tyre which we also mended. Time was now slipping away as we set off for Roxbourough Downs. After we turned into Roxbourough Downs the rocks gave way to bulldust. Chris stopped to get directions from a guy in an F100 but at the next intersection was undecided about which direction to go so we headed north anyway. We motored into the now setting sun. When the sun set I put Freddy in the hot seat and he peddled the Yamaha along smooth station tracks narrowly missing several forms of wildlife but eventually arriving safely at the Urandangi pub where we quenched a killer thirst. Team Bendigo, John Cecil, Bruce, Doubleday, Slab and Bones were already in attendance along with a heap of other rallists.

Saturday unfolded with great expectation and excitement. A couple of the Blunder Bros made names for themselves, firstly Bazza the emu killer on his first outing since he last rode with the flying doctor crashed and broke, you guessed it, his collarbone, Blue put in a blinder and came from Innamincka to Urandangi in one hit and Pete Hill who had languished north of Karumba for a week waiting for a new fork leg also motored down in one hit. Barry Wallet who 'T' boned a car a few days before he was due to leave and wrote off his bike went and bought another and fitted all his touring accessories off the old one and arrived along with the Malster and Wayne. Saturday night was party night and festivities went well into the night. Sunday morning Cecil and I counted 94 bikes in the campground. A lot of people headed off early and others left during the morning. At least three riders went arse over head just out of Urandangi. One broke his collarbone among other things and was bought back in in the back of a ute to wait for the RFDS, another German tourist broke his collarbone but rode off towards MT Isa to seek medical help. Another guy, Allen from Newcastle, came off and knocked himself about a bit but nothing broken except for lots of plastic on his bike which Team Bendigo spent the afternoon patching up so he could have another go on Monday.

Monday morning Team Yamaha headed north and then north west to Lake Nash over station tracks to the start of the Sandover Hwy. We made good time but our dream run came to an end midday Tuesday when the mudguard stay broke necessitating the removal of the sidecar mudguard. We then had trouble with the fuel pump on the auxillary fuel tank and couldn't pump up our reserve fuel.

Tuesday night we stayed with friends in The Alice and then motored south to Marla where we turned onto the Oodnadatta Track and bush camped about ten Ks out.

Wednesday morning we found fuel dripping out of the main tank but as the tank was full we decided to motor on to Oodnadatta where we removed the now depleted tank and arildited a small hairline crack in the tank. Freddy checked the frame and found a break in the tube that runs from the swingarm pivot to the top shock mount. We got this all welded up and then headed to William Creek where we camped behind the pub.

Friday night saw us at Orroroo and then Renmark before the final run home on Sunday. We arrived back in beautiful Downtown Lavington about 5.00 tired but elated at the success of our mission to the Off Centre Rally at Urandangi. The Yamaha had carried us safely and comfortably with minium trouble over six thousand Ks.

The Off Centre Rally is not for the faint hearted, the unskilled or the unprepared but gives great satisfaction and provides heaps of fun and excitement to all participants.
